Why the Pelican?

For the last 20 years Don Rafael "macho" Elizondo has practiced wood carving and he frequently gathers on his property and in the Chirripo Pacífico River, branches and roots that Mother Nature has formed, and needing only the finishing touches of talent and imagination, he transforms them into true works of art.

It was while looking for this type of wood that Don "macho", three hours from our Hotel, found a grand, twisted trunk, polished by water, which had the clearly recognizable form of a pelican. The trunk was too heavy and the trail too difficult for Rafel to transport it to his workshop, so he left it by the edge of the river with plans to return later and retrieve it.

During this same time a natural phenomenon took place, affecting our entire country, one that macho Elizondo had not expected. Hurricane César hit land along the coasts of Central America and provoked great amounts of rain; floods and landslides affected the greater part of Costa Rica's territory.

Several days later, when things had returned to normal, macho Elizondo went out to look for wood along the edge of the river in front of the Hotel; to his surprise he found the same piece, which weeks before he had left three hours upriver, without any major damages. Without further thought, he brought this piece to his workshop, cleaned it and varnished it. Now this is the symbol of our hotel, one of the most representative pieces in the collection of this local sculptor and the namesake of our business, the Hotel de Montaña El Pelicano.
